alejandro Toledo’s extradition in peru and the u.s.

Coverage for El Comercio (Peru) and the San Francisco Bay Area’s KQED.

Former Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo was extradited from the United States on April 22, 2023, nearly four years after his arrest in connection with one of the biggest corruption scandals in Latin America. Toledo, who served as president from 2001 to 2006, will be judged in Peru for allegedly receiving $20 million from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in exchange for aid to win public works contracts.

Starting in 2017, when Toledo was first declared fugitive, I covered the extradition process in the San Francisco Bay Area for El Comercio and Radio Programas del Perú (RPP).
